A Hot, Wet Sabbatical

Day 31

Even before I designated 2010 as my sabbatical year, I tried to create little practice moments when I cleared my mind and disappeared into a world far from my routine.

Showers became my favorite practice sabbatical opportunities.  For a few minutes, it’s possible to be completely mindful and present of the joys of water, of soap, of the healing that comes from cleansing.

A shower is perfect for washing off mistakes, unpleasantness of any description, or a bad mood.

It’s a good place to count blessings.  It’s an opportunity for a fresh start.

There have been times in my life I truly craved the opportunity to stand in warm water and get clean.  I know there are people in many parts of the world who can never have the hot, sanitary showers I enjoy in my home.

Every shower is a baptism and a blessing, and I appreciate each one.

Cats give themselves baths several times a day. It’s amazing to watch. Always clean, always protected (their self-cleaning makes them water resistant, takes away smells that aren’t theirs, etc.).

Thank you Ruth Ann. Ahhh, delicious warm water! Showers give me safety and sanctuary where I find water moments of grace and gratitude.
