( ____ ) Yourself

Day 55

When I’m coaching, I notice that many of my clients (most of whom are high achievers) have trouble giving themselves credit, applause, appreciation, and honor when they deserve it.

I’m not talking about accepting congratulations from others – I’m talking about an inside job.  You congratulate yourself.

Over a quarter of a century ago, I interviewed  best-selling self-help author Dr. Irene Kassorla  and she asked my radio listeners to reach around and pat themselves on the back.  She also demoed her “Give yourself a kiss” move, planting a smooch on her fingertips, and then touching both of her cheeks.

My own coach might say I’m not too good at this self-appreciation thing.  I am much better – and considerably more experienced – at self-criticism.

However, I am giving myself props right now for keeping my daily commitments today, Day 55.  It wasn’t easy to make the time to keep my sabbatical promises to myself, but I did it.  I feel proud of myself for that.  I appreciate myself for having the determination and discipline to get it all done.

There’s a useful list of hints for sticking to new habits on the great Zen Habits blog .   And why not give yourself a kiss right now,  just for being you?

I notice the same with some coaches. Many love to applaud their clients and yet have a problem accepting a compliment back from them. Great point Ruth Ann!
